About this deal

I am not a regular reader of manga, but as this series has to do with Richard III, I figured I would give it a try. The story line is very loosely based on Shakespeare’s plays Henry VI, Part 3 and Richard III. And if you think the Bard plays fast and loose with historical facts, wait until you read this. Requiem of the Rose King was written and illustrated by Aya Kanno. It was serialized in Akita Shoten's shōjo (girls') manga magazine Monthly Princess, starting in the magazine's November 2013 issue on 4 October 2013. [12] [13] On 4 June 2021, Kanno announced that she had completed the storyboard for the final Requiem of the Rose King chapter. [14] On 6 October 2021, Monthly Princess revealed that the series would end in four chapters. [15] Requiem of the Rose King concluded in the magazine's February 2022 issue on 6 January 2022. [16] [17] Akita Shoten collects the series' individual chapters into tankōbon (bound volumes) published under their Princess Comics imprint; the 17th and final volume will be released in Japan on 16 June 2022. [18] And when Henry says he can “finally kill him,” in the end he became Richard, helping him love himself, and killing King Richard the Third in battle. It makes sense and I hate that it does! Henry finally does die, on-screen this time in one of the final panels so there's no doubt about it this time. Truth be told I don’t know whether I can’t stop thinking about it/it doesn’t sit right because I love Henry too much, or because it was a bit anti-climatic in a way. I don’t know, all of that foreshadowing led me to believe there could've been more done with that arc, maybe a little bit of both. But in the end, it did make sense. Richard it is implied would live to see another day, based on his promise to Catesby (who did get a semi-happy ending!!!) but wow, just blown away by this ending. I love full-circle moments and will forever hold this series near and dear to my heart.

I really loved this volume of the manga. It's clear that Aya Kanno has done research on the Wars of the Roses and knows the history. I love how they are able to weave history with the story they are wanting to tell. It makes the story so interesting and I've been so invested when I have been reading this story. I love how it's a retelling of Henry VI and Richard III from Shakespeare as well. But the final scenes showing that Richard chooses to continue the struggle (especially in contrast with all the people that died around him who had that choice of life or action taken away from them directly or indirectly) and choosing to accept and perhaps even love himself, and the somewhat open ending on glorious, beautiful imagery the only way Aya Kanno knows how, is really powerful. Yes, power and glory is an illusion and tragic as an overarching theme, but for Richard, his final message is of self-love and acceptance.

However, I'm just gonna say that please, PLEASE, read the manga instead as J.C.Staff's complete and finished adaptation and interpretation of this magnificent historical tragedy series is severely underwhelming in all aspects, and is a very stark comparison against the original source material which had so much depth and cognizant feelings. And this is all coming off from director Suzuki Kentarou which directed Summer 2018's Satsuriku no Tenshi (which had a very similar dark premise), which almost seems like a slap in the face to the psychological, horror and suspense genres, and now adding the historical, action, drama and supernatural themes altogether to make one more extra bad and awful rap. There’s a lot of action in this book with plenty of battles as York defeats Lancaster. It is during this time that Richard’s hatred for the Lancasters grows when he learns of his beloved father’s death. Following success on the battlefield, the late Duke of York’s oldest son becomes Edward IV, who showers affection on his two younger brothers, giving them royal dukedoms and encouraging them to seek out the pleasures of women. This isn’t enough for young Richard, who remains bitter over the loss of his father. Even the interest of Anne Neville isn’t enough to take his mind off of his dark thoughts.

Civil war grips Medieval England as the houses of York and Lancaster vie for the throne. Richard, the Duke of York's youngest son, wants nothing more than to see his father crowned king, but he struggles with a secret that he fears to confront. I don’t know if it’s just me or if Kanno has finally reached a flow with this series, but this volume was really good for me. this'd be incredibly fun to book talk though, i think it may actually beat out one hundred years of solitude for things that are hilarious to describe to unsuspecting folks And let me just say that Aya Kanno reminds me once again why I write my own stories; to create the happy endings I want and have certain relationships resolve the way I think they should be. But seriously, I don't think this could've ended any other way, and my love-hate relationship with the author rests in a peaceful surrender.Y por último Edward Lancaster. El odio hacia su padre por el hecho de "haberle quitado todo" hará que lleve a cabo una acción de la cual más tarde se arrepentirá. It's been 7-8 years, but I have read Richard III and Henry the VI (both inspirations for this manga title) so I thought I knew what I was getting into. I was a little leery of mashing the two titles together, but Shakespear is so dramatic (especially his Histories and Tragedies) that I thought it would make a good pairing with a Shoujo manga. A second spin-off manga series, Bara-Ō no Sōretsu: Gaiden ( 薔薇王の葬列 外伝, "Requiem of the Rose King: Side Stories"), began serialization in the April 2022 issue of Monthly Princess on 4 March 2022. [17] [64] The series is written and illustrated by Kanno, and its chapters will be collected into two tankōbon volumes. The series focuses on events not covered in the main series, including stories about the characters' everyday lives and Queen Margaret's past.
